Recent SEA Projects

Sustainable Energy Advisors have been entrusted by our clients to work with them on a wide variety of renewable energy projects. Over the past year, those include:

Detailed Due Diligence - Wind Asset Acquisition Support

SEA was appointed by a large international renewables fund to provide technical due diligence services relating to the potential acquisition of a wind project in late stage development in Scotland, UK. The asset was located in an area with several neighbouring wind projects and needs to share complex arrangements for power export and road access. On-site environmental obligations, planning conditions, land-owner forestry management plans and civil and electrical balance of plant engineering procurement and construction works were assessed to dimension a compliant and achievable construction budget and programme. The client successfully acquired the project in a highly competitive bidding process.

Asset Management - Solar Asset Performance Improvement

SEA was appointed by a large investment fund to provide technical Project Management services to resolve equipment based performance problems with their portfolio of solar assets. Scope included a diagnostic and root cause analysis, development of a remediation programme and associated budget, procurement of plant and services and ensuring HSE and corporate compliance from design through to installation.

Asset Management - Wind Asset Warranty Management and Performance Improvement

SEA was appointed by an international renewables fund to provide technical and project management services relating to a large operational wind farm in Scotland, UK. The wind asset was experiencing a variety of problems including a grid connection issue causing severely constrained operations and a design and construction quality problem not addressed by the Owner’s Engineer, turbine supplier or balance of plant EPC contractors.

We worked directly with the national grid operator agreeing to the implementation of an innovative capacity sharing arrangement with neighbouring generators, significantly increasing project income and long-term value. SEA’s work on the operational problems identified the root cause of issues with the turbine tower and foundation structures, provided a defect resolution and monitoring programme together with a warranty settlement with the balance of plant contractor.

Initial Project Screening - Identifying Renewable Energy Opportunities

SEA was engaged by an international landowning and forestry organisation to assess the potential for renewables development on their existing UK land portfolio. The assessment considered the wind, solar and hydro energy opportunities, including an indicative design, estimated annual production as well as capital and operational costs. In addition, we worked with the client to assess its options, from leasing land to a developer to undertaking the development itself.

Initial Project Screening & Detailed Due Diligence - Portfolio Development

SEA was appointed as technical advisors by a large international renewables investment fund to conduct due diligence for a portfolio of wind, hydro and solar projects in Southeast Asia. The projects are at various stages of development and SEA provided a technical assessment of all the projects. The client successfully formed a partnership with the local developer to take the portfolio forward and SEA is now managing and coordinating the technical aspects of the projects through to Ready to Build status.

Detailed Due Diligence & Project Delivery - Solar Project Full EPC Responsibility

SEA was appointed by a large international renewables investment fund as technical advisor for a large solar project in South America. SEA conducted the due diligence leading to the client’s acquisition of the project. We then assumed full responsibility to take the project forward to Ready-to-Build status, including managing the local technical services and managing all aspects of final design and procurement. SEA then assumed construction responsibility, through to COD.

Portfolio Management – Asset Management Organisation “Make versus Buy”

SEA was engaged by a large international renewables investment fund to help them develop a strategy and organisation for Asset Management, in anticipation of rapid expansion of their asset portfolio. We conducted an organisation diagnostic, identified issues related to the scalability of the current approach and recommended a strategy and organisation focused on optimisation of acquisitions, construction and operations using digitalisation, and Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) to manage the complete asset lifecycle.
